Just had an email from Mary and the Hanmer horse riders club. Some of you will already know, we at the above riders club have carried out work in St James under DoC s supervision last year, and as a result of this work have been given funds for this work, and these funds have officially been held within this club and returned to further aid horse riding / trekking within St James and the inner Hanmer village horse trail work... Currently Doc have Consortium bids open, for all sorts of pleasure activities with horse trekking being just one of these, to help fund better use by these various pleasure groups of St James and the Hanmer area.. We at the above club are considering putting in an application to help fund and in conjunction with volunteer help, opening up a recently approved part of the original St James walking track to now include horse trekking .. Two of the currently under used huts along this trail have been ear marked for horse rider overnight stops, and we would like to install a horse overnight paddock there, this being the Rokesby hut in the Boyle river, and also the remote Steyning hut in the lower Magdalen Valley.. Also funding looks likely to be approved to renovate the historic McArthurs bridge hut, that we have been pushing to have upgraded for horse riding use in the Lower Waiau, when the current nearby Pools hut is removed as its in a poor state... Along with this funding application we at the above club would also like to clear part of the old track in the lower Waiau to Tin Jug hut area, and also the Charlies saddle to Waiau river track.. If successful and there is a good chance we will be then we will be calling on riders to come along for a couple days with our horse to perform this clearing and fence building work... I will keep you posted..\ Cheers tony
