Just posted to Twitter: I would like to ask @DevinSRose, convert to Roman Catholicism, a question based upon his book. I note that TurretinFan wrote a wonderful review of the book and posted it this morning. But since Devin and I will be on Up for Debate on Moody Radio this weekend, I have also obtained the book and am almost finished myself. At Kindle location 1137 (wish the page numbers really worked) Devin writes, An infallible interpreter, one that can be asked questions and that can clarify its statements, is far superior---especially when dealing with passages of Scripture that produce conflicting interpretations. And that is exactly what we have in the Catholic magisterium. A few inquiries: 1) Who interprets the infallible interpreter? I mean, once the Magisterium speaks, those words are written down. And now they have to be interpreted. Only the most starry-eyed visitor to the Vatican will be unaware of the fact that the number of interpretations of even the most recent papal encyclical are MANY, let alone something like Vatican II. Goodness, today we have the differing views of two living Popes! So, it is fine and dandy to claim an infallible interpreter---but what is Francis cell number anyway? Youve never spoken to him, have you? So, when you want to know if the form of Δικαιωθέντες at Romans 5:1 really means justification is something we look back upon, and that it was accomplished by faith, can you just give Francis a ring on that? And what about that textual variant in Romans 5:1? Is it ἔχομεν? Or is it ἔχωμεν? Has Rome spoken to this? If not, why not? Which brings me to my second question, 2) Can you provide the infallible commentary on Scripture that your words seem to promise to us? Just how many texts has Rome infallibly interpreted for us, Devin? Some say only seven verses have been infallibly interpreted; others say none have at all. Dont you think it would be completely necessary for the Magisterium---if it actually has the authority and power you say it has---to have ended all controversies on this topic by now by producing the singular, infallible Bible commentary? But, as you know, Devin---the Papal Biblical Commission is soooooo far to your left, theologically and interpretationally, to make you look like you are standing alone in a corn field. So---your words promise nice sounding things that the reality of Roman Catholicism does not deliver. Why is that?
