Just ran across a fine comment by a friend of Cecil Wooley who posted this earlier today re. the VA. Worthy of a repost, IMO. Joof Lo Mal I think its laughable that the right wing wants to dump on President Obama over this. Its like saying General Patton was the reason America won World War II. That would be an unfair statement since it would be leaving out so many key figures. But the simple truth is a President cant micro-manage a government. Thats why he has a staff, thats why we have a Senate, Congress and...yadda--yadda--yadda--all the way down the line. Now if someone on the staff suggests to the higher ups that something is needed to make things run better, then its up to the higher ups to take the steps that are needed to do so. Congress...seldom...did! Thats why the VA has had problems that go back in time much further than you think. It has always been underfunded and overworked. This example alone should blow the Republican theory out of the water about a smaller government working better. It doesnt. It only works as well as its funded. Cutting taxes in a time of war (under G.W. Bush) is not an example of responsible government management. Besides when you have almost 320 million people living in your country, common sense would dictate that running it and protecting it with a government the size of New Zealand, isnt going to cut it, especially if youre constantly going to war. This VA incident is just another sign of an organization thats been neglected, not by Shinseki because hes made many improvements in 5 years with what he had at hand, but by the government as a whole. And the only reason why that is, is because too many people in our government are too damn busy gaming the system to fail. They want the VA to fail so they can privatize it just like they want to privatize the Postal Service. Its all about handing our government over to the private sector and letting them run everything; and there should be no wondering if they could be trusted to run things better. There is enough proof that shows that for-profit-systems do fail more often than the government does and they cant be trusted to take on government responsibilities. If they could, there would have been no need for government to force changes in the public health insurance system. There would be no need to put regulations on the banking industry or to require factories adhere to environmental standards. A for-profit-system has only one priority...TO MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE!
