Just read a terrific book based on the life of Maggie Dickson. Maggie was a fishermans wife who had an affair, became pregnant and disposed of the child. The babys body was discovered, Maggie was tried and sentenced to hang. The hanging, in Grassmarket, was bungled and enroute to the cemetery, she regained consciousness. Maggie was then reprieved from being hanged again since she had, essentially, had her sentence carried out, but she survived. She was, from that point forward, known as Half-Hangit Maggie. There is a pub in the Grassmarket, named in her honour. It stands just feet from the place where Maggie hung by the neck. There is a terrific Broadside at the National Library of Scotland on Maggie as well: digital.nls.uk/broadsides/broadside.cfm/id/16830
