Just seen two articles on Yahoo news that have forced me to write. Firstly, couple sees dream home demolished in Spain. Now dont get me wrong but where I feel some sort of sympathy towards them surely they must have known it wasnt cosher. Unfortnately they arent the only ones. Thousands of houses went up in Spain without permission and the bottom line is that individuals in the ayutamientos (town halls) are making thousands out of it. They are all as bent and as twisted as our own councillors in the UK. Hand them enough cash and they turn a bind eye, until they can get money out of people as fines for building the houses in the first place. Secondly is the loneliness of our elderly. I agree there is an appalling situation in our society regarding this but there are local charities and people willing to give their time to help elderly people so they dont have to feel lonely. My experience is is that the elderly still REFUSE charity still seeing it as a stigma. Heaven forbid they should have a meal with common people, as my granddad used to say. If I was house bound then I would want somebody to pop in and keep me up to date with the outside world. Carers DO NOT have time to do this NOT that they dont want to. Part of it is the responsibility of the social care system but I can bet anybody that there are hundreds of elderly people who do not have a social care worker. Some will have NO family and are living under the radar of the system. The only time any problems are raised is when they are admitted to hospital. In my local GP surgery I have yet to see a notice advertising our own local Care in the Community poster. I have spoken to local people and mentioned the charity and they look at me blankly and say Oh I didnt know that existed. It is a two sided coin one side is the stigma of receiving charity or admitting you need help and the other is lack of knowledge of what is available. It is NOT entirely the fault of the government. If people want help they have to ask for it if they refuse it then they really only have themselves to blame.
