Just thought I should share a little history about the name Belmopan Bandits especially as it relates to basketball which is where the name originated. First of all, the name does not belong to john saldivar. That name belongs to Belmopan. Some time in the 80s (cant remember the exact year) a group of Belmopan ballers formed the Belmopan Bandits Basketball Club and began competing at the junior level in Belize City. The name bandits was chosen because we felt we would ride into the city like bandits and snatch the game from the City teams who had everything going for them including the refs who absolutely did not want an out-district to beat their city team. After competing for several years the club went dormant until we revived in 1995 as the BUCA Bandits. What a wonderful team that was. Later in 1996 I got the opportunity to acquire the Santels FC and thats how the Belmopan Bandits Football Club was born. Belmopan Bandits in football and basketball is a Belmopan tradition not a John Saldivar thing though on many occasions I have had to singlehandedly carry the financial load of sponsorship. The Belmopan Bandits tradition must live on in basketball and football not in honor of John Saldivar but in honor of all who pioneered basketball and football at the semi-pro level here in Belmopan. The do otherwise is to not appreciate the signifance of tradition!! Nuff said!!!
