Just want to point out some inaccuracies in the previous - TopicsExpress

Just want to point out some inaccuracies in the previous statement. Yesterdays council meeting was mired in confusion on all sides, public gallery, Councillors and press it would seem. No mention of the debate in the Connaught Telegraph this morning. I must point out that I only arrived after the debate when the vote was being carried out. So what I gathered happened was Lisa Chambers (FF) proposed an amendment to Rose Conway-Walshs (SF) motion that was what most would say a whole new motion not an amendment, which should have been submitted ten days prior. Lisas amendment focused on bring about an amendment to the constitution, which would forbid the sale of Irish water. Whereas, Gerry Murray (SF) brought up EU competition law, articles 106.2 TFEU and Article 107 TFEU. (read them yourselves), which basically state that all services are subject to competition law once commercial value has been established. However, when Lisa Chambers amendment was voted on many INDs abstained through confusion. Michael Kilcoyne abstained saying it was illegal. So, Fine Gael got the win. Mayo Co. Co. have no power to abolish Irish water or the charges, so the vote was merely symbolic. All the water protesters were looking for yesterday was for Mayo CO.Co. to stand in solidarity with the vast majority of the people in Mayo, but instead we got farcical confusion. Although we try to our best not to promote any particular party or elected representative, credit where credit is due. Fair play to SF and the INDs who did their best especially Gerry Murray who constructed a great argument that in my opinion seemed to fall on deaf ears. On behalf of Mayo says no. I do apologise for any inaccuracies, but nobody seemed to know what was going on including most Councillors. I would urge all interested parties to read the minutes of the meeting to get clarity on this issue. As there are names mentioned here I am going to sign my name to this. Again apologies for any inaccuracies Danny Coffey
