Just wanted to share a little proud moment I had today... Well, several actually... My Chihuahua, Astrid, is the fearful dog in our household, the Dachshie Mix, Tilly, is just shy, and Im trying to help them both. Weve been working on going in the garden lots, and Ive finally got Astrid to the point where she does all toileting outside - I picked up those damned puppy pads Ive been stepping over for the past TEN YEARS! Feels so good... And no accidents. Im amazed. Anyway... today, we were in the garden and next doors Dalmation barked (he runs to the the fence and is able to put his paws on it - not particularly aggressively, just excitedly and very vocally!). Usually Astrid runs at the fence and attempts to get under it to get to him and give him a piece of her mind: this panics me no end, and I usually end up having to grab her, because I freeze in panic mode by which time, shes run over to the fence. Today, dog barked, Tilly let out a low growl that I settled with a treat. Astrid started to run towards the fence, and I didnt chase, didnt panic, just stayed in place and calmly called her with a What have I got? which is a treat signal. She came over and took the treat, and then we walked down the steps and in the back door together (where normally Id be carrying her down, worrying shed go for the fence again). Small, but magical and proud moment: proud of myself for managing the situation and not panicking, and proud of her for listening and remembering that treats are SO much more exciting and valuable than a vocal Dalmation... ;) Thank you for giving me a place to share this :) xxx
