Justin Barnes: Hey Binky, any good stories about Danny & Peter? Love the original Mac! Remarkably, Justin... August 1970... While I was working as the gopher @ Guitar Lab, where I first met my own 59, one day, Peter, Danny, Jeremy all walked in together. Im pretty sure McVie and Mick were missing. Anyway, they were all low-key but wide awake guys. Utterly down-to-earth. Totally sober. They seemed surprised that we (the staff of 5) were making a big deal out of them. I wish I could report verbatim conversations, but, it was mostly small talk about guitars, strings, their tour. Peter was the most low key, but wasnt shy. He laughed at jokes, made his own. Jeremy kinda took a seat in a corner, but, threw out comments, too. The main reason theyd stopped by was because Danny, the most intense of the three, was looking for an old Strat. Starstruck, I blurted out, I have a November 1957, Danny. Ill sell it to you for $300. He replied that if I brought it into the shop tomorrow, hed come by to check it out. I brought it in and Kirwin did indeed come back around 3pm. He played my Strat through a Fender Pro-Reverb for about 10 minutes, asking me a question about the guitar now and then. Finally, he said, I like the neck, but, $300 is just too much for a Stratocaster without its finish. Sorry, mate. Cheers. I sighed one of the truly deepest sighs of relief in my life. The gold shown here (of course, I still have it) is an ancient refin... more Les Paul gold than Shoreline...
