K.Surendran was one of the major novelists in Malayalam literature. He resigned his job in Telecommunication Department in 1964 at the age of 43 and devote himself fully to literary purpose. He received the prestigious Vayalar award in 1994 for his famous novel Guru . This novel was based on the splendorous life of Sree Narayana Guru, the most revered of spiritual leaders and social reformers in Kerala. About the inspirational sources behind Guru, K.Surendran said It is Kumaran Asan, the great renaissance poet, whom I admire the most among our men of leaders. I have not come across such a consummate blend of thought, word and action in any other writer. Every word of his bore the imprint of his inner person as if it were the signature of his very soul. Asan had the highest esteem for Sree Narayana Guru, his spiritual master and mentor. He even hailed the Guru as a divinity who had shown him the right path to the sublime. Asans assertion hit me as a revelation as I plunged into the life and times of Sree Narayana Guru. For no work of mine had I meditated so profoundly and lost myself in trance as I did for Guru. It was a heightening experience for me
