K9s for Warriors Graduates Latest Class: Local service dog organization helps wounded vets lead new lives! Emmanuel Bernadin feels guilty because he lived. While serving in the Navy in Afghanistan in 2011, he was supposed to be part of a convoy headed to camp. A last-minute change of plans cancelled his participation, and the vehicle he was supposed to be traveling in was rammed by a car filled with explosives, killing all on board. Bernadin, now living in Orange Park, lost 12 friends that day, and suffered crippling anxiety so severe he was confined to base. Now, thanks to the Ponte Vedra Beach-based service organization K9s for Warriors, Bernadin is able to live a more normal life. His French mastiff, named Bronze, serves as his medical alert dog. “He helps me to mitigate symptoms before they flair up,” Bernadin said. “He helps keep me calm.”
