It teaches us to say `No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…” (Titus 2:11-12, the Holy Bible). -ooo- WHAT’S IN STORE FOR RP IN 2015? What’s in store for the Philippines this 2015? It is easy to know, just by looking at the news headlines. For example, the headlines for Sunday, January 04, 2015, from one major broadsheet and from one popular tabloid newspaper are clear enough indication as to where the country and its people are headed in the next 12 months or so. This broadsheet’s headlines read: “DND misused relief fund”; “Attempted rape in prison; attack on girl sparks outrage”; “Bilibid problems institutionalized”; “Bilibid VIP convicted drug dealer, suspect in judge slay, up for parole”; “Santiago: Thousands in Zamboanga City tents since 2013; “Ex-MWSS exec sued over P26k”; and “Did this Baguio solon just bulldoze 761 trees for a private road?” On the other hand, the Filipino tabloid newspaper reported, for its Sunday, January 04, 2015 issue, the following headlines, already translated in English: “Trader mauled, robbed by a PNPA cadet, barangay kagawad”; “Decomposing body of suspected suicide discovered”; “Four teenagers on outing drowned in the sea”; “BIFF attack: 1 soldier dead, 3 wounded”. -ooo- PNOY’S “GOOD GOVERNANCE” FAILED: Those were just the headlines. We are not even talking here of the other stories for the same Sunday which, although similarly spectacular, were not given headline treatment and were therefore merely relegated in the inside pages of both the broadsheet and the tabloid. In unison, however, all these inside-page stories talked about crime and criminality, graft and corruption, and decayed morality. What do all these indicate? Many things. First, all of these show that President Aquino and his officials utterly failed in their much-publicized quest for “good governance” and in their fight against graft and corruption. Aquino is nowhere near “good governance”, even as graft and corruption is perceived to be more vicious and widespread under his presidency, reaching all the way up to him. Second, the foregoing also prove that many Filipinos, whether native-born or of foreign descent, have unfortunately fulfilled the Biblical prophecy about people becoming ungodly and unholy, capable of sinfulness, of crime and criminality, and of committing even the most heinous of offenses just so they can please themselves or their families with material wealth and possessions. -ooo- PNOY MUST LEAVE HIS OWN LEGACY TO RP: This is the reason why I have been writing here, since 2010, about the need for Aquino and his closest advisers to urgently confer and find out what they would want to leave as a lasting legacy to the Filipino people, after they shall have stepped down from power in 2016. This is quite important, not only because six years is just too short a time to do anything real good for an entire country and its people. Finding out what legacy Aquino can leave after his term, one that would really change the country and the nation, is something that is expected of him, he being the son of two well-respected political figures in this country who, whether we admit it or not, influenced to a large degree the destiny of everyone here following their respective forays in politics. Surely, institutionalizing good governance and cutting down graft and corruption are two good legacies, coupled with achieving peace with groups which have been engaged in rebellion for a long time now. But these cannot be fully achieved in just a period of six years, as Aquino may have realized by now.
