KAMLA: The crime and personal safety issue has haunted our nation - TopicsExpress

KAMLA: The crime and personal safety issue has haunted our nation for far too long and for far too many years, was allowed to grow into a monstrous army against law-abiding people of our country. But remember - when we speak of progress in the fight against crime, we are not comfortable. As long as the risk that even one family can feel the fear and terror of crime, our work must be aggressive, focused and fast. We began in 2010 by saying we will work hard to make you safe. This evening, I affirm that commitment to now work harder, to make you safer! Following today’s Cabinet meeting, I requested a comprehensive update on the progress with crime reduction initiatives.Based on these discussions, I have instructed the Minister of National Security, Senator the Honourable Gary Griffith to immediately take forward his implementation programme. The Introduction of the Rapid Response Unit- For the first time, the Ministry of National Security will implement a Rapid Response Unit to work in partnership with the National Security Operations Centre (N.S.O.C.). This strategy will deliver a swifter response to all criminal activity everywhere through: 1. An already identified bank of 77 modified police vehicles; 2. The zoning of 15 regions across our country based on scientific evidence of crime, the existing infrastructure, estimated response times and the concentration of housing communities; 3. The assignment of 51 modified vehicles which will mean 3 or 4 vehicles continuously present and continuously in motion in each region; 4. The installation of GPS tracking in the modified vehicles to ensure that as distress calls come in, we can immediately identify and send the police offices nearest to the call who will be able to respond the fastest; 5. A deliberate move to increase regular visibility of police in each of the 15 regions to deter criminals from believing they can attack families with impunity, and 6. A responsive and rapid response collaboration with Helicopter, Ambulance and Fire services depending on the nature of the emergency calls. The Re-Introduction of the Community Policing This initiative is two-fold: 1. Communities will have the benefit of the safety of training protective services in close proximity to their homes and families, and 2. Communities will be able to have regular interaction with the protective services and build relationships based on trust. Important to this strategy is the fact that trust is essential to information, and information is essential for action. Increased Resources for Municipal Police Greater resources will be allocated to Municipal Police as a measure to bridge the manpower gap. This means, instantly, where there is a shortage of men and women to respond to crime, a stronger partnership will be built between the Police Service central command, and the Municipal Corporations. Confidential Security Strategies In addition, other strategies will see an assault launched on criminal gang and their illicit activities. While some of the strategies we can discuss publicly with you, there are some which require quiet, but deliberate implementation in order to not only deter, but also capture and prosecute criminals.
