She feared they would be bound for alleged dog fighting rings. The woman, who asked not to be named, witnessed the attempted abduction first hand recently, and captured images. She said a man came to her house and marked her fence with chalk before returning the next evening to try and lure her dogs out of the yard. “They came back on dusk and opened my gate and made whistling noises,” she said. “My dogs were not taken due to the fact that I was suspicious and aware of this procedure.” She said the man parked outside her house, checked her front yard and loitered in front of her property while talking on the phone. He then continued to scan the yard while walking down the footpath with a bag in hand before returning to open the gate and attempt to coax the dogs from the yard. The woman is part of a number of people who claim the fence markings are used to indicate houses thieves can target. She has since started a Facebook group informing people of the dangers and distributed flyers throughout Logan. “It’s staggering how many people are unaware of this potential danger to their dogs,” she said. She said properties are canvassed and marked before thieves attempted to steal them by whistling, coercing, opening the gate or drugging dogs. She fears dogs are then transported for dog fights. The woman said dog owners should take measures to minimise the risk of theft by locking all gates, keeping pets away from sight, questioning suspicious people and checking the property for marks. “I am also urging anyone who no longer can have a dog, not to do a free giveaway ad anywhere,’ she said. “This is just another avenue where the dog fighting rings get stock from. Always, surrender it to a shelter.” Logan Central Police Station officer-in-charge Warren Parker said no reports had been made, but advised dog owners to take precautions to stop theft. “We hear of dog theft happening occasionally but most are unreported to the police,” he said. “We consider dog fighting to be a bit of an urban myth as there is no evidence to suggest it is happening. “We encourage dog owners to have their dogs microchipped and take the normal precautions to protect them like securing the yard properly.”
