The local body institutions can play a vital role in water conservation. Members of all grama sabha and ward sabha members will be given training on importance of water conservation,” said P.P. Balan, Director of KILA. He was addressing a workshop organised in KILA as part of the preparation for the training programme on Thursday. Though the State is blessed with bountiful monsoon showers, rivers and backwaters, we are awfully illiterate about issues related to water. Only five per cent of water is being saved in reservoirs. The rest is untapped, the workshop noted. Alarming scarcity of water owing to climate change is a major concern across the world. Every country, big and small, was feeling the pressure of dwindling water resources. Water literacy is the key to water security as the world reels under a sever water crisis, it said. The training programme will also give thrust to scientific management of waste. The programme conducted with the cooperation of local body institutions will be started on December 1. It will be concluded on January 31, next year. Training will be given to 125 selected members from each ward. In all, 19,255 wards from 1,043 grama panchayats will take part in the programme. About one lakh people have been trained for leading the training programme. The topic of the training programme will be “Sanitation, drinking water: current situation and the solution.” River day observed The unmindful sand mining and water exploitation led to destruction of most of the rivers, said senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran. Addressing a function held here on Thursday to observance of River Day organised by the Kerala River Protection Committee and the Chalakudy Municipality, he said by mindlessly exploiting rivers, human beings were destroying the water bodies. “The political parties should come forward to fight for protection of rivers. Rivers are not dumping places for waste. The pollution caused by Nitta Gelatine company is creating diseases in the area,” Mr. Sudheeran said. B.D. Devassy, MLA, called upon the local bodies to fight against encroachment of rivers.
