KLYC EDITORIAL ON WALLACE BRIDGE This is an open letter to the Natural Resource Conservation Service. We have some questions regarding Wallace Bridge and absent a return phone call from you, we are asking those questions on the air. KLYC Radio supports this equestrian venue as a win win for the environment and we believe the record, the environmental evidence collected to date, and even your own hearings officer in the first appeal view this as a win win for the environment and the local economy. First question. Why are you requiring Carlton LLC to conduct a NEPA study, National Environment Protection Act study. This would be to determine any negative environmental impacts from the proposed easement modification when during three times this year herbicide, possibly Roundup is being sprayed on the property to try to get rid of native invasive weeds. What kind of impact does that have on the environment. How long is it going to take for you to reclaim this habitat? The proposed easement modification would give you the habitat you are trying to establish on the current easement. Why not save some money and modify the easement. Congressman Kurt Schrader is asking your agency to either approve the easement modification or explain in detail why this request should be denied. While you are at it, please explain this unwritten policy of saying no to every easement modification unless there is a gross technical error. The law states you are supposed to make decisions which benefit the Wetlands Reserve Program, so if a proposal comes up that benefits the program, and you just say no.....are you not violating the law? Your agencies own arguments in your most recent victory indicate your determination to simply stop this easement modification. You reject the appellants submitted data without even setting foot on the property to obtain your own data proves you just want to say no. How many other project have you kicked to the curb which could have benefited the environment and helped create jobs. Maybe its time to take a very hard look at the inside of the Natural Resource Conservation Service and how you do business. Having a member of the House committee on agriculture asking you to explain in detail which this request should be denied is a good first step. We think a more thorough investigation is in order.
