Kamineni Eswara Rao was born on August 26, 1918 in Bhatlapenamarru, Krishna, Andhra Pradesh, The Indias own `powerhouse Kamineni Eswara Rao who took part in the 1952, 1956 (11th place) Olympics. Widely acknowledged for redefining the skills in the sport at the highest level, Eswara Rao was known in the circles as one who defied the book and scripted his own fabulous feats. He was adjudged `strongest man of India in the 1954 Senior Nationals in Delhi in the 90 kg category and also won the Strongest man of India title, at one stage held as many as 25 national records. For the record he was the first weightlifter to win a silver medal in the inaugural Asian Games and also the Mr. Universe title winner in London. A fitting tribute to his genius was paid by the famous American coach Bob Hoffman who remarked on watching Eswara Rao: You have a powerhouse in Rao. What you need is scientific training and speed.
