Kanya or Virgo. Virgo is “the virgin” in English language and Kanya is an unmarried female in Sanskrit. The reference to ‘virgin or ‘kanya’ is of universal meaning in world religions as the cause of immaculate conception. The name refers to primeval feminine aspects of Nature or ‘Prakriti’ in Sanskrit. The Hindus narrate many tales of the sufferings the Mother Nature or ‘Parvati/Prakriti’ has to undergo to help the Divine Plan. This sign is the only one to have a human symbol (Gemini the twins are more of an abstraction). The geometric symbol of three vertical lines, a snake connecting the lines on the top and the tail going down carrying a cross has a deep mysterious meaning. The vertical lines refer to the three ‘gunas’ or attributes, they are ‘Rajas’ or Activity, ‘Tamas’ or Inertia and ‘Sattwa’ or Harmony. The snake is considered to be a symbol of enlightenment and wisdom. The snake connects the three ‘gunas’ to kill ignorance and give birth to new life of consciousness. The snake carrying the cross on its tail indicates it is heavily burdened by materialism. This sixth sign stands for the incarnate spirit to dabble in the hidden forces of nature after the first sign-manifestation, second-procreation, third-intellect, fourth-imagination and fifth sign-order.
