Kapita Condemns Mangango Violence, Blames PF for Importing Lusaka Cadres Opposition United Party for National Development, UPND, vice-president Richard Kapita has asked police to arrest the ruling Patriotic Front cadre imported from Lusaka to Mangango for political violence. The PF cadre, allegedly a resident of Kuomboka township, was severely beaten after he and other ruling party supporters attempted to set a bridge ablaze in a bid to frustrate UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s campaigns for the August 19 by-elections. Kapita expressed sadness with the manner in which the PF has continued to sponsor violence. “As much as we sympathise with the PF cadre currently nursing injuries from beatings from local people, we demand that police arrest him for espionage and also interview him on the purpose of his coming all the way from Lusaka to Mangango just to come and burn the bridge and intimidate voters,” he said in a statement released to the media on Saturday. Below is the Full Statement UPND on MANGANGO VIOLENCE We in the UPND wish to condemn in the strongest terms the violence that was orchestrated by the PF cadres mostly imported from Lusaka for the Mangango by election scheduled for 19th August, 2014. The gutting of the bridge by PF cadres to make it difficult for our party president Mr. Hakainde Hichilema to campaign must not only be viewed as political violence but criminal and barbaric. To this effect it is well established that PF are only interested in winning elections at the cost of infrastructure development, the people of Mangango mainly depend on agriculture and timber trade and need the vital bridge to transport their produce. We also wish to distance our party youths from the violence that left one known PF thug of Lusaka’s Kuomboka compound seriously wounded. The dear people of Mangango and Luampa were provoked by the PF’s wanton destruction of the bridge and may have been forced to take the law in their own hands. No UPND cadre participated in the beating of the named PF cadre who was transported from Lusaka for the purpose of causing violence. It further explains why the local people decided to beat him because they realized that his action was sabotage and the absence of the bridge would not affect him. We want to caution the PF and other parties to desist from importing cadres and pushing us into a tight corner. We are being attacked in almost every by-election, just on the Copperbelt our ward official was beaten and stripped naked by the PF. As much as we sympathise with the PF cadre currently nursing injuries from beatings from local people, we demand that police arrest him for espionage and also interview him on the purpose of his coming all the way from Lusaka to Mangango just to come and burn the bridge and intimidate voters. We shall remain committed to conduct peaceful campaigns everywhere and we want to thank the general citizenry for showing confidence in us. We should collectively kick out the PF and liberate our dear mother Zambia.
