Karate History: While stationed on Tulagi, British Solomon Islands during World War II, Robert Trias meets his first martial arts teacher, Tong Gee Hsing. Trias was training for the South Pacific Boxing Championships when the two met. Hsing taught Karate and Hsing Yi out of a hut in Tulagis Chinatown. Hsing was a student of both Shang Tsao Hsiang and Choki Motobu. Grandmaster Trias would go on to open the first karate school in the United States in 1946.
