Karen and I attended a major sporting and cultural event today in Barbados. We went to a cricket match where the West Indies faced England. It was one of the most restful sleeps Ive had in years. I never knew why this game was called cricket. But as it turns out, while its being played you can actually hear the crickets quite clearly chirping in the field. At least THEY are entertaining. Since it was a very important match (NOT to be called a game as I discovered from the Trinidadians next to me), it was thus a very expensive match. The ticket prices were just slightly more than half our airfare to get here in the first place! Nevertheless, with a capacity crowd of Brits and Bajans, the entire spectacle soon focused on what is most important during these international competitions; DRINKING! Now, Ive long been impressed by the way some of my British friends can knock back pints. But in the heat...NOTHING can beat a highly motivated Bajan with unlimited access to cold Banks listening to soca, calypso and reggae and knowing theres a full-blown stand up urinal nearby. The Brits took a horrible beating at the hands of the West Indians. At least thats what I think happened because the score was 163/2 with 2.3 overs with a ball left after 16 batsmen hit the wickets with a googly from a fast bowler.
