Karunuday Singh wins a double crown in Manila NEW DELHI, MARCH 31: Karunuday Singh defeated the third-seeded Shuichi Sekiguchi of Japan 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the final of the $15,000 ITF mens Futures tennis tournament in Manila, Philippines, on Sunday. It was a double crown for the 23-year-old Karunuday, as he in partnership with Ivo Klec of Slovakia beat the top-seeded Rubert Gonzales of Philippines and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Thailand 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the doubles final. The Indo-Slovakian combination had pulled through to a 7-6(1), 2-6, 12-10 victory over the second-seeded Benjamin Mitchell and Andrew Whittington of Australia in the quarterfinals . It was an impressive performance in the singles by the 486th ranked Karunuday as he beat a clutch of quality players along the way. After warming up with comfortable victories in the first two rounds, Karunuday beat the second-seeded Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(5). It may be recalled that Ti Chen had teased the countrys No.1 player Somdev Devvarman for nearly five hours in the last Davis Cup tie in Indore. In the semifinals, the eighth-seeded Karunuday negotiated another three setter as he overcame local wild card Patrick-John Tierro 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. It was the second singles title for Karunuday who had won a similar tournament at home in Delhi in 2011. It was the third doubles title for him. After losing in the first round of the last five tournaments in India, Thailand and China, it was a welcome return to form for Karunuday who had lost in the final qualifying round of the Chennai Challenger. He gained 27 ATP points from the tournament, each for his singles and doubles triumph.
