Kashmir woman ‘killed’ for dowry A woman hailing from a suburb of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, was killed for dowry, her family alleged on Thursday. The family staged a protest demonstration at the press enclave here seeking action against the in-laws of their daughter who was found dead in her home. The family alleged that their daughter Shaheena, 30, was murdered by her in-laws after they didn’t accept the demand for dowry. “Since last six years of her marriage, she was physically as well as mentally tortured by her husband and in-laws who live in Al-Hamza colony Buchpora,” a family member said. She was even tortured for basic necessities like food, medicine and school fee of her daughter, he said. Shaheena’s mother alleged her in-laws had forcibly taken the jewelry of the victim and another valuable before murdering her. On the day of alleged murder Shaheena’s family was informed late in the night that she was hospitalized in SKIMS. “But when we went to the hospital we were informed that she is dead and has been brought back to home,” she said. A copy of the hospital report circulated by the victim’s family reads: “brought dead”. The protesting family sought a stern action against the ‘murderers’ of their daughter. Police have started investigations into the incident.
