Katella Pleases Coach by Winning Marina Title REGISTER/OCVARSITY.COM - By DAMIAN DOTTORE December 29, 2014 7:18 PM ocvarsity/articles/martinez-76795-goal-katella.html ________________________________________________ KATELLA PLEASES COACH BY WINNING MARINA TITLE HUNTINGTON BEACH - Katella boys soccer coach Juan Martinez stared at the wooden plaque cradled in his left arm, pointed to the word “champion” and said, “This ... this really means a lot.” The plaque was for beating Orange League rival Anaheim, 3-1, on Monday at Marina High in the Knights’ first appearance in the Marina Tournament title match. But Katella’s real sense of accomplishment, Martinez said, came from knowing it achieved success when some people “didn’t want us to be here.” Martinez claimed that early in the three-day tournament racial slurs were directed at the Knights, a predominantly Latino team, by fans for an opposing team. He declined to say which school was involved. Martinez informed tournament officials about the verbal abuse and said he was told the matter would be dealt with. “We went against a lot of stuff in this tournament, but we won it all,” Martinez said. “It really motivated the kids. That (the comments) is what made us stronger.” Hipoloto Amador gave the Knights (7-2-2) the lead in the 25th minute, curling a 25-yard shot inside the near post and past Jose Espinoza as he leaped to make the save for the Colonists (6-2-1). Jose Troncoso set up the goal, opening up space for Amador, by drawing two marks while dribbling the ball into the box. Troncoso had a hand in the winning goal, too. Three minutes into the second half, Troncoso rolled a free kick to Cobian Fabian, who wrapped a shot around the Colonists’ wall and into the upper-right corner of the goal. Hilario Sanabria set the final margin with his goal in the game’s final minute. “He (Troncoso) is more mature and a lot of people know him so now they are marking him a lot,” Martinez said. The Colonists’ goal came off a penalty kick by Paul Diaz in the 48th minute. Only a few inches stood between Anaheim and a victory as Jose Gonzalez and Eduardo Chavez both had a good look at an open goal when Katella’s keeper came out to play the ball. Both of their shots just missed its target. “Normally we are scoring goals like that,” Anaheim coach Joe Chavez said. ocvarsity/articles/martinez-76795-goal-katella.html
