Ke Aupuni UpdateNovember 15, 2013 Keeping in touch and updated on activities regarding the restoration of Ke Aupuni o Hawaii, the Hawaiian Kingdom. Ua mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono. --------- It appears the United States and its puppet government, the State of Hawaii are getting more desperate to keep the Hawaiian Islands under their control and stop the Hawaiian Kingdom from returning. • Kana’iolowalu scrounges for names We reported in our August update that Kanaiolowalu (the Native Hawaiian Roll) fell far short of the goal of enrolling 200,000 Hawaiians by July of this year. They got just over 15,000 — about 7% of their goal. To make up for the dismal failure, they asked the legislature for an extension, asked OHA for more money ($2 million), and decided to raid other native Hawaiian lists (like Kau Inoa) for names to add to Kanaiolowalu. Sure enough, in mid-October the Roll Commission announced that they had welcomed (appropriated, taken, helped themselves to) over 71,000 names from the Kau Inoa and the Operation Ohana lists and added them to Kanaiolowalu (after allegedly allowing people on those lists to opt-out). So now Kanaiolowalu is boasting 94,000 names, of which at least 75% (the 71,000) never actually gave their consent to have their names on the list. This is not just highly irregular, it is downright illegal. This desperation act ties in to the next item…. • Akaka tribe shifting to Obama tribe? In our August Ke Aupuni Update, we reported that US Rep. Colleen Hanabusa confirmed that discussions were underway with US President Obama to have him issue a presidential executive order to grant federal recognition to Native Hawaiians. This scheme would have the president do what the Akaka Bill couldnt accomplish through the US Congress for the past 13 years — classify Native Hawaiians as an American Indian tribe. We sounded the alarm in Washington about the new scheme. As a result, the US Civil Rights Commission, in a letter dated September 16, 2013, cautioned President Obama against using an executive order to recognize/create a Native Hawaiian tribe. Basically the letter said the president does not have the authority to declare a tribe into existence and to do so would be a violation of a number of US laws, as well as the US Constitution. Despite this warning, the Obama-tribe scheme is still being vigorously pursued by the State of Hawaii, Office of Hawaiian Affairs and others. They intend to use the powers of the president to turn the Kanaiolowalu-state-recognized indigenous people of Hawaii into a federally-recognized Hawaiian/American tribe so that the Hawaiians identity, rights, lands and other assets would be controlled by the US government just like federally recognized American Indian tribes are. It is time to mobilize exposure and opposition to stop this Obama-tribe scheme from leading Hawaiians into deeper bondage. We were able to stop the Akaka tribe, we can stop the Obama tribe and bring us closer to a sovereign, independent, free Hawaii. Meanwhile, the Hawaiian Kingdom continues to advance... • Diplomatic Progress At the UN in New York I spent seven weeks (mid-September to the end of October) at the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York to monitor and participate in discussions on issues that can affect our pursuit to free Hawaii from occupation. Following the reinscription of French Polynesia (Tahiti) to the decolonization list last May, there has been a pronounced growth in UN member states support for the UN to expand and accelerate the decol process for others. This means that original peoples and nations such as Hawaii, would have access to the UN mechanisms to pursue independence. Keying off this renewed interest in decolonization, leaders of captured peoples and nations pursuing independence, such as Hawaii, West Papua, Rapa Nui, Alaska, and those from Canada, America, Australia and so forth (the list is growing), have initiated an advocacy/mutual support group called The Decolonization Alliance to actively pursue reform and re-activation of the UN decolonization process. (see attached press release) This is a significant step and Ill be updating you regularly on its progress. At the UN in Geneva, Switzerland In meetings in February/March, May, August and September at the UN in Geneva, we continued to press forward with various UN human rights bodies to request an investigation of how the Hawaiian Islands came to be a domestic state of the US in 1959. We are very close to having several independent Pacific Island nations request our petition be transmitted from UN human rights in Geneva to the General Assembly in New York. This action would lead to exposing the illegal US occupation of Hawaii and give credence to our demand for remedial action. This would work well with the above-mentioned Decolonization Alliance. In Zurich, Switzerland A few days ago, Dr. Keanu Sai, gave a presentation to The Swiss Diplomats – Zurich Network in Switzerland on the topic: “Hawai‘i – An American State or a State Under American Occupation.” Professor Niklaus Schweizer, the former Swiss Consul for Hawaii and a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, gave the introduction. We hear the presentation went very well. • International Legal Actions The most recent legal action by Dr. Keanu Sai, agent for the acting Government of the Hawaiian Kingdom is a filing to institute proceedings in the International Court of Justice (The World Court) at the Hague, Netherlands. The action is against 45 states and seeks enforcement of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s Demand that States comply with their treaty obligations and obligations under customary international law. This recent filing is in addition to actions filed at the International Criminal Court in January of this year. You can follow the progress of these legal actions at the blog: hawaiiankingdom.org/blog/ Attached is a list of recent diplomatic and legal actions initiated by the Hawaiians Kingdom. • Stepping It Up When you take into account the numerous actions invoking diplomatic systems, international laws, and acts of kue (challenging jurisdiction, challenging land titles, resisting evictions, reclaiming kuleana rights, iwi kupuna, sacred sites, etc.), the overall effect is that we are turning up the pressure to liberate our nation... If all goes right, by next year, the international community will begin pressuring the US to explain the past 115 years of occupation of the Hawaiian Islands. At that point the US claims to Hawaii will begin to disintegrate, and the Hawaiian Kingdom emerges. But no matter what international legal/diplomatic actions happen, they will only be significant if there is widespread, popular political support for a Free Hawaii. That means we have to drastically step up our efforts to raise our visibility and convey our story to the world so all will be moved to support freedom for Hawaii. We need every freedom-loving Hawaiian to join the campaign to convince ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our communities, our nation (Hawaii) and the world. If we portray our story in compelling ways, the internet can be utilized make our story go viral. • Important November Dates in the Hawaiian Kingdom November is a very significant month. Part of building up our nation is to increase our consciousness of the Hawaiian Kingdom. By celebrating or otherwise observing these special holidays and important dates we maintain our connection to our country, our proud heritage, our amazing kupuna and, consequently to each other and those yet to come. Nov. 11 (1917) - 96 years ago - Queen Liliuokalani passes away at her home, Washington Place Nov. 11 (2003) - 10 years ago - Transfer of the Island of Kaho‘olawe from the U.S. Navy to the State of Hawai‘i to hold in trust for a native Hawaiian nation. Nov. 16 (1836) - 177 years ago - King Kalakaua born Nov. 23 (1993) - Twenty years ago - U.S. issues the “Apology Law” (USPL 103-150) admitting to the facts that the U.S. illegally assisted in the seizure the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893. The Apology Law calls for “reconciliation” of the wrongdoing. Nov. 28 (1836) - 170 years ago - La Kuokoa (Independence Day) Great Britain and France officially recognize the Sandwich Islands as a soverign, independent state. This was a huge national celebration. • Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty screenings In October, the documentary film. Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty, had a very successful screening in Rome, Italy supported by the Museo Nazionale Preistori Etnografico and the Ministry of Culture. It was presented in conjunction with La Danza Hula by La Scuola Halau Hula o Manoa. Based on this successful screening, plans are underway for more presentations in other European cities. At home, there was a HAVFS screening at the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs Convention on Kauai this past Tuesday night, and there will be another at the talk-story briefing, An Update on Hawaiian Independence tonight (Friday) in Koloa, Kauai. • Update on Hawaiian Independence presentations Several weeks ago I gave a talk-story briefing, An Update on Hawaiian Independence to Hawaiians and friends of Hawaii in New York City. It was a very successful and gave rise to a NYC-based hui to promote our cause in NYC and vicinity. Tonight (November 15) Ill be giving a similar talk in Koloa, Kauai and again tomorrow (November 16) at Island School (next to Kauai Community College). The object is to encourage our people by informing them how well we are doing in moving inexorably toward the goal of freeing Hawaii from the occupation.
