We may safely assert these two things, in general, without undermining civil government: - one is, that no civil rulers are to be obeyed when they enjoy things inconsistent with the word and commands of God. All disobedience in such cases lawful and glorious; particularly if people refuse to comply with any legal establishment of religion, because it is a gross perversion and corruption of the pure and divine religion brought from God to man by the Son of God himself, the only head of the Christian Church. All commands running counter the revealed will of God are null or void; and disobedience to them is not a crime but a duty. Rev. Jonathan Mayhew (1720-1766)
