Keep calm and drive on police tell drivers as Operation Safe Arrival continues Senior highway patrol police are concerned with drivers becoming impatient while returning home from their festive season break Traffic and Highway Patrol Command’s Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said as many drivers were preparing to return home this weekend to start work next week “The “she’ll be right” attitude is so prevalent in the Australian culture but it doesn’t belong on the road,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said. “Complacent drivers are the ones who are placing themselves and their passengers at risk of being in a crash. “Plan your trip home and remember to be patient as there will be delays and factor in additional time. If you do become stuck in traffic, don’t try and take opportunities that aren’t there to take.” Assistant Commissioner Hartley also appealed to passengers to speak up and talk to their driver if they saw them behaving inappropriately. Operation Safe Arrival, the state’s Christmas-New Year road safety campaign, started at 12.01am on Friday 19 December 2014 and runs until 11.59pm Sunday 4 January 2015. The Christmas/New Year Road Toll remains at eight. By the fourteenth day of Operation Safe Arrival police had detected 12126 people travelling above the speed limit, an increase of 582 on the same point in the 2013/14 operation. Police had conducted 696,682 random breath tests and charged 1020 people with drink driving, a decrease of 189 on the same point in the 2013/2014 operation. . Double demerits are in place from Wednesday 24 December 2014 until Sunday 4 January 2015, for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.
