Kemari, 3, was a much loved inpatient for almost two years of treatment for his complex medical condition, bringing smiles and laughter to all who stopped by his cabin. This week, the toddler came in for an outpatient appointment with mom Anquisha, prompting respiratory therapists, nurses and even cleaning staff to stop by to check in on “Pop-pop.” “Everyone loves Kemari,” said Linda Robinson, manager, respiratory care. “He’s so sweet. Were really pleased with his progress. We successfully weaned him off the ventilator before he was discharged, but he still has a trach and g-tube.” Known for his characteristically chubby cheeks, Kemari lit up the exam room with smiles as Izhar Qamar, MD, prepared to see him. Kemari was a good boy, sitting still as Dr. Qamar listened to his lungs, opening his mouth before being prompted and turning left and right so the doc could examine his ears. “He’s very smart,” said Dr. Qamar with a smile. “He knows what’s going on and he knows what equipment does what.” Kemari and his twin brother, Kemarion, were born premature at 26 weeks. Kemari, the older twin, had many life-threatening events as an infant and now has severe respiratory issues, developmental delays and vision problems. However, both twins are overall healthy and enjoy being at home. “He’s a very busy bee,” said Anquisha as she watched Kemari play with Dr. Qamar’s nametag. “La Rabida’s helped us out a lot.”
