Khadijah Costley White: Heres the thing. Ive learned to deal with oppression. I mean, its soul-numbing, hurtful, scary, and infuriating, but its one thing. But to be oppressed and have people telling you nothings wrong, that theres no oppression, that youre just making it all up DESPITE HISTORY and ACTUAL DATA that keeps telling us otherwise?? Its like being in an insane asylum and the inmates are running the place. This willful amnesia is just mind-blowing. White supremacy is a hell of a drug, and denial is the syringe. At least white folks in South Africa have the decency to say they didnt know what was happening during Apartheid. But too many white folks here stare at our suffering, watch mothers weep over the bodies of their dead sons, and then deny its even happening. This is not like being a lower human. This is like not being a person at all.
