Khama, Mugabe tiff plays out at Sadc Summit THE severed relations between Botswana President Ian Khama and President Robert Mugabe played out in the open at the just-ended 34th Sadc Heads of State and Government Summit in Victoria Falls when the Gaborone leader snubbed Mugabe’s official opening and closing remarks. Although reasons for Khama’s absence at the two sessions were not disclosed to the public, NewsDay is reliably informed that the Botswana leader was avoiding being publicly humiliated by Mugabe. The two leaders, who incidentally were elected Sadc chair and deputy respectively, have had an uneasy working relationship over the past decade with Khama labelling Mugabe as “illegitimately elected”.
