Kidnapping Hoax Ends in Multiple Arrests (REEDSBURG, WI) Four men were arrested on New Year’s Eve after they attempted to report a kidnapping in an effort to fund a marijuana purchase. Officers were called in reference to a kidnapping by a subject who reported she was told to provide $900 for the safe return of her boyfriend. Her boyfriend, Maximilian J. Greenwood (19) of Baraboo and Zachary J. Vance (19) of Reedsburg had allegedly tried to purchase marijuana but didn’t have enough money. Vance had already taken the marijuana and fled but Greenwood was being held against his will until the cash was delivered. The kidnappers identified as Tanner E. Gross (17) and Robbie G. Hilterbrand (26) both of Reedsburg were waiting for payment before they would release Greenwood. Officers arrived at the designated exchange location and took Gross and Hilterbrand into custody and Greenwood was transported to the hospital for an unrelated injury. During the investigation it was revealed that the hoax was concocted by Greenwood to fund the purchase of marijuana from both Gross and Hilterbrand. Greenwood allegedly explained that his girlfriend wouldn’t bring the money unless she felt he was in danger. Greenwood was charged with Obstructing an Officer and Bailjumping; Vance, located later, was charged with Possession of Marijuana; Gross and Hilterbrand were charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver. All four were taken to the Sauk County Jail.
