Kiitos to a new Finnish Canadian friend who gave me the jist of the wording to this song. Teri Mehrman, Gloria Aske, Linda Bergan, Connie Zappe, and any other Mukkala/Johnson family. This is a rather idyllic version of what life was like for our 12th or 13th grandparents but this is our family...... here is the jist: In the 1500s Paavali and Anna Halonen were looking for a place to live, a homestead, and they decided to go to North of Finland. There they found a stream with fish to feed their three sons. They loved the scenery in the North, and settled there by a wooded hill (vaara) and beside it a bog (suo) with a spring that gave them water to drink. There were also lovely yellow berries (hilla) which they ate. The stream became a passage to float logs. The place is called Kemijärvi, (Kemi lake). This is not word-for-word translation but it describes the content of the song.
