Kilbeacanty 0-20 Rahoon/Newcastle 1-10 This summer will be one to remember as the Mercury hits the 30s. Paddy had to pull out the square baler again and Christy Corless will have the turf home next week. There are traffic jams around ballyturn cross daily as cars full of Kids head to Lough Cutra Lake. Mattie Fahey is killed out putting chips on boiling tar on the roads around South Galway. There isn’t a paddle pool left in the country and duffel coats have been replaced by t-shirts. Bulmer’s and HB have recorder record sales and more people are eating outside than inside, The horse burgers are well forgotten and the butchers can’t keep the BBQ specials made. PJ Hawkins can’t keep the 99 cones filled and to top it all of the Hurlers of the Parish have reached the quarter final of the Intermediate championship. Rahoon/Newcastle started this game well and had 2 points on the board one from play and one free before Kilbeacanty settled into the game and it was Ross O Donnell who scored a great point from the stand side of the field after good work from Enda Craddock. Ross then tied up the scores when he converted the first of 4 65s that he would score in this game after Stephen Carey was denied a goal after he cut in from the left and had his shot saved by the Rahoon/Newcastle goalie. Indeed the two teams were level 6 times in this contest with no more than 2 points separating them at any time up until to 15 minute to go in the second half. Ross then struck over a free after a foul on Enda Hughes. Rahoon/Newcastle levelled again with a point from a free before Alan McCarthy responded with a great point from play after good work from Chris Fahey. Rahoon/Newcastle again pointed from a free before Florence McCarthy who had a very impressive opening quarter pointed from play after a great run through the Rahoon/Newcastle defence. Rahoon/Newcastle then struck for a goal when a long clearance for their centre back Tony Og Regan deceived the Kilbeacanty Fullback line and the Rahoon/Newcastle corner forward ghosted in to finish to the net. Kilbeacantys response was immediate and Enda Hughes pointed after good work from Craddock to leave the score 1-4 to 0-6 with 20 minutes gone. Rahoon/Newcastle were then guilty of some bad wides before their wing back put a long rang free over the bar for their next score. Ross pointed another 65 after another Kilbeacanty goal chance and Stephen Carey levelled the game again with a pointed from play after a great clearance from his brother James. Rahoon/Newcastle then scored 2 in a row one from play and 1 free before Stephen Carey had the last point of the first half after good work from Niall Donohue who had bust in to the game in the second quarter to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-9. Pat Fahey was introduced for Gerry Lally at half time and Niall Donohue laid down an early marker with a surging run forward from defence a landed a great point from play and Kilbeacanty went ahead when Ross pointed another 65 after Enda Hughes and Stephen Carey forced the Rahoon/Newcastle goalie in to playing safe by putting the ball over his own end line. The early stages of the second half however followed the same pattern as the first half with both sides swapping points with Alan McCarthy scoring a point from play in-between 2 Rahoon/Newcastle frees. Ross pointed again after a foul on Florence McCarthy and Rahoon/Newcastle pointed another free which left the score level for the last time at 1-10 to 13 points. Then came the decisive score of the game when John Fordham now picking up the Rahoon/Newcastle danger man in the corner back position bust out of defence before charging forward in to the Rahoon/Newcastle side of the field to scoring an inspirational point from under the stand. Fordham then returned to defence before driving out of defence a head of his man in the next play as well before delivering up the field to brother in law Florence McCarthy who was fouled and Ross duly pointed the resulting free. The Rahoon/Newcastle heads now dropped and Kilbeacanty hit a purple patch scoring in total the last 8 points of the game. Ian Byrne who had replaced Chris Fahey was looking lively and pointed after been set up by Stephen Carey and Ross pointed another free after Enda Craddock was fouled in the middle of the park. Fordham was then involved in a shuddering collision as he broke up a Rahoon/Newcastle attack and left the well-built Rahoon/Newcastle attacker on the floor before clearing his lines. It looked like he would be unable to continue as he received treatment after but you would probably have to knock him out cold to get him of the pitch at that stage. Ross then scored his 4th 65 of the game after he himself did well getting a hurl to a ball that was dropped into the danger zone by Stephen Carey forcing a good save from the Rahoon/Newcastle goalie. Craddock then scored from play to round off a great performance from him. Fittingly Man of the Match Ross O Donnell scored the last point of the contest from a free following a foul on himself to bring his tally for the day to a perfect 10 points leaving the final score 0-20 to 1-10 Kilbeacanty had to show good character in this game as it took a long time to breakdown this Rahoon team and the manner in how they finished was admiral you have to remember just two years ago this Rahoon/Newcastle team defeated Kilbeacanty by more than 20 points and they were also in a position to qualify if the won this contest so they were not holding back. They backs were solid without been spectular with Niall Donohue always to the fore. John Fordham was inspirational at the key points of the game Enda Craddock had a fine game in midfield and as ever worked and grafted all through the game Florence had his best game in a while also and was especially prominent in the first quarter Alan McCarthy popped for two vital scores as did Stephen Carey who always looked dangerous. Ian Byrne also looked lively when introduced and scored a fine point. Ross O Donnell was man of the match scoring 0-10 and was flawless from dead ball situations and got reward for the hours of practise he put in over the last month in particular as anyone that has passed the pitch could tell you, his general play was good also and he looked busy all through the game. Kilbeacanty now qualify for the quarter finals for the first time in a number of years and with only 6 teams left in the competition they should not fear who every they are drawn against and if they continue to apply themselves they should have a right cut at it. The races are on the way and when there over Kilbeacanty will still be in the Championship for the first time in a number of years that’s something Kilbeacanty people should be very proud of. Team was Nick Baily, Mike Coen, Declan Hughes, Gerry Lally(Pat Fahey), James Carey , Niall Donohue(0-1), John Fordham(0-1), Enda Craddock (0-1), Florence McCarthy(0-1),Noelie Glynn, Enda Hughes(0-1), Alan McCarthy(0-2), Christopher Fahey(Ian Byrne0-1), Stephen Carey (0-2), Ross O Donnell (0-10, 0-5 frees 0-4 65s) Well done lads keep it lit.
