Kramat (mausoleums) vaults: On Sunday 17 January 17 1886 – two days after Tana Baru was officially declared closed, the child of Amaldien Rhoda, a Muslim fisherman, resident at Burke Cottages in Woodstock died. That same afternoon at 14h00 a funeral procession of 3000 Muslims walked on their way to the Tana Baru cemetery at the top pf the Longmarket street, an act in defiance of the law. The Tana Baru – a cemetery of HEROES All nations hold their pioneers in veneration. Any people conscience of their cultural and historical striving and proud of their social heritage would pay tribute to their outstanding historical characters and preserve the links to their past. In this context I want to honour all whose activism and strides have concluded that the Tana Baru is indeed an historical MONUMENT and serves as a beacon to South Africans achievement in their liberation. Notwithstanding the dignity and humility of the current bona fide land owners who have acquired the plots surrounding and including – the ‘inhabitants of the Tana Baru’ from the 1960 onwards. Surely we give credit and recognise your sentiments in respecting the feelings of the entire Muslim community to let the sanctity of these burial grounds remain intact. We salute you for this: Erf 682 Muslim cemetery board (presently registered in the names of members of the cemetery board - took transfer in 1934 (who in 1920 enclosed the entire areas as a Muslim cemetery – quite conspicuously no could ascertain why they enclosed the complete area? Noted too – this property was granted in trust to the Mohamedan population of this colony as a burial site in (erf 682) Erf 401 Edries (previously Booley 1966 who took transfer on 24 August 1966 – consequently this property was transferred to hadjie Abdullah Makkie Edries after a court sale. Erf 678 Hospital Welfare was sold at public auction to the Executive Committee of the Hospital Welfare and Muslim Education Movement who took transfer on 5 May 1967. Erf 680 Was subdivided and erf number 9410 created. This new erf 9410 was then sold to Moghamat Adams. The present owner is Dr Omar Faried Pandie who has both erven numbers 680 and 9410 registered in his name. This erf, 680 was dormant till 1966 when it was sold by public auction to Noor Abrahams who took transfer on 29 June 1966. Erf 679 Was originally a portion of erf 683. It was sold to imam Hadji, founder of the masjidul Shafee in Chiappini Street, by Truder in 1857. Imam Hadji as the first owner took transfer on 26 February 1857; it remained registered in his name for more then 100 years. From imam Hadji it was passed to sheigh Achmad Mohammed Behardien, who was also an imam at mosque Shafee – suffice to say he knew (nay reported) that he purchased the ground to prevent it from passing onto unsuitable owners. Hence, his assurances to the Schotsches Kloof Civic Association that he would never use the erf for constructing a house on it. This was an obvious indication that he knew that he was purchasing burial grounds and that this burial ground belonged to the congregation he was serving. He died in Makka 1974, the property as part of his estate passed to his son Dr Mohammed Phaldie Behardien, who took transfer on 15 September 1975. Erf 683 No longer exists. In January 1857 it was subdivided into erven 677, 678, 679, 680 and 681. It is on this erf 683, of which the western side is erf 677 (presently) that Paay Schaapie’s grave is located and which in all probability was the portion of land granted to him by General Jansen as a burial site for him and his family. Erf 961 Known as the ‘only crown land’ and still regarded as ‘crown land’ Erf 960 This property was sold by Hendricus Andreas Truter 18 April 1834. On 26 March 1857 it was transferred to Agiet Magadien alias Hadjie Medien. Erf 960 remained registered in the name of Hadjie Medien until it was sold by public auction to Gamat Dien Davids who took transfer on 7 November 1966. On 3 May 1977 this property was transferred to the names of Sharifa and Naomi Davids the present owners. Erf 938 and Erf 962 Registered in the name of the Mohametan Population of Cape Town on 26 November 1830. It should be noted that Muslim are buried on these erven (above) since 1772. Jun 20, 2007
