Kris Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas, and someone I admire as a singer and songwriter. In 1990 on his album “Third World Warrior” he sung his song “Don’t Let the Bastards (Get You Down)”. After the election results here in Texas and across the Nation it is worth listening to and could very well be the anthem of our times. With Gerrymandering, Voter ID laws aimed at discouraging voting, Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United that allows the buying of an election, repeal of key parts of the Voting Rights Act, and the misinformation campaign waged by the rightwing media it is hard not to think that this election result was decide before anyone voted. The way the system is fixed those with the most money are the only ones that have the power. As TX Observer stated: “The state (Texas) ranks 50th in percentage of high school graduates among its populace, first in amount of carbon emissions, first in hazardous waste produced, last in voter turnout, first in percentage of people without health insurance, and second in percentage of uninsured kids.” Since we can’t go any lower I guess the plan is to bring all the States down to our level. Not a good plan.
