Kris Winter Rinkus Laski Never have I perspired so profusely as I did at the lepersoreum. We were all drenched. We sang songs, one girl played her guitar, and prayed with the youngest woman before we left. She had been too shy to come out of her room, she was lovely except that part of her nose is missing. The sense of the presence of the Lord was overpowering. Leprosy has been nearly eradicated, and is treatable now, so no one was contagious. Doctors can stop the progression when they identify it, but they cannot restore what is lost. To the Dominicans these are "the untouchables." We touched them, held their hands and hugged them all. It was humbling. We were relieved to get to our hotel, peel off our filthy clothes, rinse off and swim again. Then we were taken out for a delicious Chinese meal.
