Ku Nan told to put road name changes on hold --------------------------------------------------------------- DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok has urged Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to seek approval first from the Conference of Rulers before renaming eight roads in Kuala Lumpur. Her statement follows a clarification from the Keepers of the Rulers’ Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad that the Conference of Rulers did not order Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to rename the roads. “Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan (left) should put on hold the road name changes and seek the Conference of Rulers’ views and approval on both - the proposal to make the road name change and the suitability of the roads chosen,” she said in a statement yesterday. Effective last month, eight roads in Kuala Lumpur had their names changed to the names of former Agongs. The roads are Jalan Duta, Jalan Khidmat Usaha, Jalan Ipoh, Persiaran Duta, Jalan Khidmat Setia and Jalan Ibadah, Lebuhraya Mahameru, Persiaran Mahameru and Jalan Semarak, which were renamed Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, Jalan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Persiaran Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Jalan Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar, Persiaran Tuanku Ja’afar and Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, respectively. Previously, Tengku Adnan’s deputy, J Loga Bala Mohan, reportedly said that the name change came at the request of the Conference of Rulers, but the federal territories minister has since clarified that this actually came from his ministry. According to Syed Danial, the proposal was submitted to the Conference of Rulers and later withdrawn by the ministry and not resubmitted. No disrespect to sultans Meanwhile, Kok said people are unhappy with the name change not because they disrespect the rulers, but because of the authorities sudden decision made and the suitability of the roads chosen for renaming. She said some city folk have proposed that new roads should be named after the rulers, whereas others said that only major roads should be named after them. Kok pointed out that even Utusan Malaysia’s editorial has suggested that the name change should have been done for major roads or highways. “Tengku Adnan must, therefore, not try to justify the road name change with his simple reason that some of the roads have no meaning,” said the Seputeh MP. “Neither should anyone politicise the issue and associate any criticism with disrespect for the rulers.” malaysiakini/news/282650
