#KurunziCauses #UGANDA: APPEAL TO HELP CONGOLESE REFUGEES Dear Colleagues, Conflicts in the Eastern provinces of Democratic Republic of Congo have left scores of people in desperate situations. The events in November 2012 that led to the capture of the Capital of Goma, amidst armed violence, killing and destruction led to the displacement of an estimated 140,000 people in camps and settlements around Goma; with all the subsequent humanitarian impacts on these groups. As fate would have it, the already complex situation in the region was even made worse by the renewed fighting between the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebels, a Ugandan based group residing in the Eastern DRC, and the DRC government forces, which attacks last July saw an estimated 70,000 fleeing into Uganda. Of these over 17,000 are still at Bubukwanga transit camp in Bundibugyo District, Uganda. The affected people, most of them women and children, have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing violence; in the process it was practically impossible for them to carry along all basic necessities. There is therefore an urgent need for various stakeholders to help these people meet some of their basic needs. Efforts by the national and regional governments, the UN as well as Civil Society Organisations and other Actors have made some contributions to the situation, but a lot still need to be done in addressing the plight of this population. It is against this background that a network of peace-building organisations and other actors at regional and national levels are undertaking additional efforts to support in reducing the suffering of the affected community. We therefore appeal to all well wishers (individuals, institutions, the women’s movement and the entire civil society, etc) to come to the rescue of these brothers and sisters. We will be collecting Financial and in-kind items like clothing, beddings/blankets, soap, sanitary towels, first aid kits, cooking utensils, food stuff, salt and any other items that may be necessary given the situation.
