Kwara Govt. Distributes Improved Maize Seeds To Farmers On Friday,Kwara Government offered 14.2 metric tonnes of improved maize seeds to farmers for planting this cropping season. The improved maize varieties, provided in partnership with West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme, would be planted on 710 hectares of land across the state. Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed, in a message to the distribution of the seeds in Ilorin, said the state is targeting to harvest 300 tonnes of the maize varieties at the end of the season. Represented by Mr Kayode Towoju, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, the governor said 450 farmers were selected from across the 16 local councils of the state to benefit from the programme. He also disclosed that about 40 out-growers farmers would benefit from the certified maize seed production. The governor warned the farmers not to utilise the seeds for consumption as they had been treated with chemical. In his speech, Dr Sunday Atanda, the Managing Director, Kwara Agriculture Development Project, said the programme would enhance mass food production, in line with the administration commitment to meet MDGs target on food security. “Developmental activities in the agricultural sector are aimed at moving agriculture from subsistence to commercial level; this effort confirms the strong will on the part of the government to boost the agricultural sector,” he said.. Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Malam Mukaila Salahudeen, expressed gratitude to the state government for the programme. He assured that the beneficiaries would make maximum use of the opportunity to boost farming in the state.
