LA Times Festival of Books has given me room to pause for a moment, and think long and hard about our 2014 momentum, because the event kinda punched us in the gut. The event itself was wonderful, USC has a beautiful campus, and festival was organized well, save for a couple little things. We got a TON of positive feedback on the booth, the books, the covers. But the event was a financial failure, and while I’m not complaining about any of it, I’m doing this to build a publishing company, a prosperous, vibrant company. And you have to be honest with yourself, this one was not a winner. Certainly, there is still residual reverberations that could come back and lessen the blow but I kinda felt like we tried to invade France in 1944 with one well trained soldier and a leaky landing craft, and air support provided by one of those single seat hang gliders with the lawnmower motor. We didn’t tell our story well enough, plain and simple. You think you get bombarded by advertising, try Living in LA- makes Vegas on a Friday night seem deserted. We adjusted from Friday to Saturday, to be sure, which didn’t help sales any, but did seem to help interest. But the bottom line is that for all the pretty book covers we displayed and all the meet and greet we did, we didn’t let our collective Brick Cave Story shine for us, our character failed to come through in the way we presented ourselves. PHXCC, our signature event, our home turf is coming up. time to go back to the drawing board, and really create an experience for our visitors that compels them to buy, gets them connected, and excites them about what we do. On a personal level, I had a great and Fun weekend, met a ton of new people and really enjoyed the short time I was in LA.
