LAKE VICTORIA FRONT MAKING NEWS!!!!! MEMBER States of the Sectoral Council of Ministers for Lake Victora Basin have RESOLVED to improve lake transport within the region. The 13th Meeting conference held in Kisumu town Last Friday and chaired by Environmental Secretary Judy Wakhungu, said that this will improve transport and communication across the region. “We will consider utilizing maritime resources to promote East African Community’s economy.”Wakhungu said. She said there is need to unite Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda for a collaborative transport system. “There is a need to take advantage of the Lake Transport and use it constructively, “Wakhungu said, Uganda’s Water minister Ephraim Kamuntu said the challenges affecting EAC countries like pollution in the lake and piracy can be addressed through improved lake transport. He called for conceited efforts to reverse pollution in Lake Victoria. LVBC executive secretary Canisius Kaningire said they are prepared to tackle the re-emergence of Water Hyacinth. He said a hyacinth harvester will be bought in two months. Environment PS Richard Lesiyampe said that Kenyan government will speed up the removal of the Mbita causeway to curb pollution. “We have plans to remove the cause way and replace it with a bridge.” In Other News… The Kisumu government is planning to re-brand Tilapias Beach “Kibandas” to conform to International standards. County Assembly Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage Committee chair Jackton Onunga said the move is part of an initiative by the country to attract more investors. He said NO trader would lose his/her job “We want to do the same in Kisumu to ensure that all “Traditional” and dilapidated kibandas are brought down and modern unique ones put up. “Said Onunga The country will partner with African French Development for this upgrading project. Speaking in the assembly on Friday, Onunga said the county will design the lake front for tourists to walk freely this will promote tourism as most of them will be able to walk along the shores of Lake Victoria as they enjoy the cool breese,” he said Onunga also added that the lakefront will enable the county government to start water-tourism sports.
