LATEST CLUB NOTES On the day that saw Arsenal end nine years of misery with victory over a spirited Hull City side in the F.A. Cup Final and Atletico Madrid crowned La Liga Champions for the first time in eighteen years following a 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the Nou Camp, we wrote our own bit of history at U.L. on Saturday as our Under 12s were crowned Division One Cup Champions while our Under 15s made it a League/Cup double. Under 12s Ben Frost has scored many important goals this season for our Under 12s and Under 13s and his strike proved decisive as our Declan Moylan managed Under 12s – runners up in the League – recorded a slender 1-0 win against Aisling Annacotty ‘B’ in the Cup Final while our Under 15s emerged 3-2 winners from their joust with Regional Utd ‘B’ and conclude what has been a remarkable year for both sides. Having just pipped Aisling Annacotty for runners-up spot in Division One League behind Shannon Town (a 1-1 draw in Annacotty had done the trick eight days earlier) we faced the same opposition in Saturday’s Cup Final (1.00pm kick-off) on the U.L. All Weather North Campus facility. The game was played in warm, sunny conditions. We had the benefit of the breeze in the first half but in truth struggled to put anything constructive together on the fast surface. Indeed, we had keeper Russell Hoban to thank for keeping our goal intact with a point blank save bang on fifteen minutes. He came to our aid again in the early minutes of the second half turning a wind-assisted pile driver over the crossbar. It proved critical as we struck for the only goal of the game six minutes in. The highly influential Eoin Lynch began the move that lead to the goal with a great ball up the left. Frontman, Conor O’Shaughnessy gave chase and sent a great ball across the penalty area for the in-rushing Ben Frost to slide home past the advancing Aisling Annacotty keeper for twelve yards out. Niall Barrett cleared off the line as the half progressed and on two further occasions we were decidedly fortunate as the Aisling boys were only the width of the crossbar from equalising. Our lads enjoyed a decent second half creating several chances as we hung on grimly to our 1-0 advantage with everyone putting in a huge defensive effort. In the end the single goal was enough. Paddy Cusack and Gerry McCormack of Schoolboy Council were on hand to present the Anthony Cremmins Perpetual Cup to team captain, Mark Moylan. Congratulations all round!! Our team was: Russell Hoban; Niall Barrett; Riain O’Connell; Ronan O’Dwyer; Ben Irwin (voted Man of the Match); Ben Frost; Sam Hanrahan; Louis Cunneen; Eoin Lynch; Mark Moylan; Conor O’Shaughnessy Substitutes: Joachim Clohessy (used); Oran Fleming; Jason O’Sullivan The officials were John Curran, Robbie Broe and Donal Power. Under 15s The Under 15 decider against Regional Utd ‘B’ (we had beaten them 3-0 in our final League outing in Dooradoyle in midweek) had a 3.00pm start on the same pitch No. 2 but the script contained a bit more drama and a dollop of intrigue as we emerged 3-2 winners following an exciting contest. After a pretty uneventful opening half hour, we made the breakthrough as Cian O’Rahilly wove his way through the heart of the Regional Utd defence before sending the ball into the net. No better man!! Fourteen minutes into the second half we made it 2-0 as Cian O’Rahilly’s well delivered corner from the right caused panic in the Regional six yard box with a Regional defender putting the ball past his own keeper. Within a minute we had struck for a seemingly unassailable third. Cian O’Rahilly was the provider, his pass playing in the impressive Jamie Stickle, who got his angles absolutely right to send a low shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. It all seemed done and dusted at that stage but we hadn’t bargained for a stirring comeback by the Dooradoyle outfit… There was a quarter of an hour remaining when Rory Phelan sent a super dipping shot from the right over the head of stranded keeper, Jack O’Sullivan, and the cat was really set among the pigeons a few minutes later when James Pender waltzed through the centre to make it 3-2. That was as good as it got thankfully as we maintained our one goal lead to the end with several nervous moments along the way. Team captain, Christopher O’Hagan received the Dillon Family Perpetual Memorial Cup from LDSL Chairman, Paddy Cusack. Our line-up was: Jack O’Sullivan; Cian Galvin; Kieran O’Connor; Brian Daly; Jordan Curry; Martin Duggan; Sam Frost; Cian O’Rahilly; Christopher O’Hagan; Jamie Stickle; Tyrone Cronin Substitutes: Stephen Falvey, Alex Lenihan, Jason Grace (all used) Michael Quinn, Patrick Kenny Well done to the lads and their hardworking management due of Paul Bateman and Stephen Collins. Doubles don’t come easy!! The officials were Donal Power, Robbie Broe and John Curran Our Juniors played their final game of the season on Saturday evening – away to Caherconlish. It finished 5-3 to the home side as we shot ourselves in the foot on more than one occasion. We were short a number of regulars but there was no excuse as we conceded three soft goals in the first twenty five minutes. The prolific Ralph Judge pulled one back prior to the interval, a Gordon McKevitt headed effort narrowed the gap still further and then the enigmatic Cian Williams hit an outrageous equaliser from close to the half way line. He figured if David Beckham and Wayne Rooney could do it, so could he!! That was as good as it got unfortunately as we proceeded to hit the self-destruct button. The home side went on to win 5-3, their fourth goal coming from the penalty spot. Our team was: Mark Linnane; Brian Shorten; Mark O’Donovan; Pa Sheahan; Darragh Purtill; Cian Williams; Aaron Costello; Keith Doran; Ralph Judge; Pa Hall; Gordon McKevitt Reserve: Stephen Collins (used) Our Ladies team played hosts to Lifford Ladies at St. Nessan’s College, Woodview on Tuesday evening. Conditions were perfect for this eagerly awaited clash. Goal scoring opportunities were at a premium as defences dominated. There was only one goal in it and that went the way of the visitors; Louise Henchy finding the net after about twelve minutes. We shaded the possession and we were in with a chance until the very end but the Lifford defence stood firm. There were great displays all round with Lisa Touhy outstanding in the middle of the park. Our line-up was: Hayleigh Power; Sinead Leahy; Alma Conroy; Lisa Daly; Karen Keehan; Laura Hughes; Clodagh Dunworth; Danielle Sheehy; Paulina Szmist; Natalie Heffernan; Lisa Touhy Reserves: Karolina, Breda O’Connell, Colette McNamara (none used) Under 11s Our Under 11s wound up their League programme with a 1-0 home win against Janesboro on Wednesday evening. A well taken Dylan Lynch goal decided the issue. We had already clinched the League the previous Friday evening with a 2-1 win away to Mungret Regional. After the game Jim O’Connor of Schoolboy Council presented the League trophy to team captain Riain O’Connell. Congratulations all round. Next week – how the League was won. Under 10s Our Under 10s fell 4-2 to bottom of the table Shelbourne at the Greenhills on Saturday afternoon. We conceded two goals in the first five minutes. Shane O’Halloran came on as a substitute and scored with his first touch while early in the second half Colm Lenihan grabbed the equaliser. We pressed strongly for the winner but the visitors struck twice on the counter attack to leave us empty handed. Despite the loss we finish in the runner-up position. Congratulations to neighbours Coonagh Utd on taking the crown. James Linnane, Jake Leahy, Jason Saiche, Aaron McNamara and Thomas Cusack were all prominent. Under 8s Our Under 8s were in action at the Greenhills on Saturday morning in an Under 8 Blitz. We played three games in total. We fell 3-2 to Shannon Hibs in our opener but then went on to beat Aisling Annacotty 3-1 and Shelbourne 4-0. Ben O’Mahony, Eoin Carey, Shane Hayes and Sam Gleeson were all to the fore. Notes: • On Saturday next at U.L. our Under 13’A’s will be attempting to make it a League/Cup double when we take on Limerick FC in the Division 1 Cup Final. The game has a 12.45pm kick off.
