LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLE – KNOW YOUR TEAM AND LOOK AFTER THEIR WELFARE The Good Leader should make an honest, conscientious and determined effort to ‘a Detailed and through Knowledge of His Staff / Team Including Their Socio- Economic Background, Ethnic, Racial Affinities, Family Background, Habits And Customs, Likes And Dislikes, Strengths And Weaknesses’. Through constant study and observations, the leader should develop and intimate understanding of how his team react and function under various conditions and challenges, so as to enable him to utilize and employ them more effectively. At lower echelons of his organization, he should become personally acquainted with his staff – know their names, recognize their individual differences and locate the capabilities and shortcomings of each. Through persistent efforts, he should inculcate a feeling of oneness, association and belonging in his team. Without knowing his team, he will not be in a position to look after their welfare particularly their domestic problems, which are the source of constant worry to his team, and will undermine their maximum output. The human desire of team to satisfy their physical, mental and spiritual needs is the basis of behaviour. It undermines, to the great extent, the sum total of their attitude towards the performance of their task. A Good Leader should be in a position to ‘think and feel for his team and anticipate their needs and desires’. He should then take prompt and timely actions to provide for their welfare and help remove irritants of their personal problems and difficulties. By satisfying the needs and desires of the team, he will be increasing the individual productivity and thus enhancing the efficiency of his organization. The Welfare of his team (people) is an official as well as moral obligation of a leader. He can never afford to be negligent or indifferent towards it. Actions Required By Leader: 1. Ensure that the pay, privileges and perks are as per the individual skill, knowledge and experience of job viz e viz economic conditions of the country. 2. Provision / Availabilities of Basic Needs i.e. Health, Education, Training, Food, etc Facilities in the Organization for the team and their close dependants. 3. Availabilities of necessary resources, tools and equipment in the organization. 4. Attending to domestic problems such as education of children, their marriage, etc. being source of worry to individual – affecting his performance on / in job. 5. Administrative and Service Matters including disciplinary cases are handle in an impartial, fair and judicious manner. 6. Provision of Recreational and Sports Facilities to staff / people. 7. Holidays and Leave regularization. 8. Provision of Religious / Spiritual facilities – places as well as positive, constructive lectures from good, eminent and balanced religious teachers / scholars as per personal beliefs of people. 9. Pension as well welfare measures for personals invalided out of service due to on job accidents. A leader should recognize his men as individuals that they aren’t disposable, and he concerns himself with their betterment. Loyalty is a two-way street. Only by demonstrating that you are interested in and concerned for your team (employees’) welfare will you win their loyalty. Do what’s best for your team, especially when this involves disciplining them. Honest concern, not manipulation, should be a leader goal. Decisions by leaders could be a matter of life or death or huge expenditure of resources. Capitalize on people’s strengths. They will be far more fulfilled in their position if they are working in areas where they are naturally gifted – as per their skill, knowledge and experience. A good leader is a compassionate listener and understands what motivates his team.
