LESSONS FROM THE ANAMBRA GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION 2013. the end of an era --------- I had initially written an article about the anambra election before the election in which i pointed out that the contest for Anambras promp job was b/w the candidates of the APGA, APC and LP represented by Dr Obiano, Dr chris Ngige nd mr. Ifeanyi Uba respectivley. I predicted that Dr Obiano(APGA) would win. As a matter of good courtsey, let me say congratulations to His Excellency, the new Govenor elect of Anambra state Dr Obiano. It appeared I was right. However, I feel as a matter of necessity that if I fail to write this article, a lot of people(Nigerians) would not discover the uniqueness of the just concluded elections. I reside in Anambra state and was actively aware of the processes of the elections including the mishaps; I am not a exactly a fan of the governor elect; so you will appreciated what I am about to say as unbiased truth from a non partisan analyst. The Anambra election was the start of a new era of politics in Nigeria pioneered by the people themselves. I lamented on the reckless spendings of candidates like mr. Patric Ifeanyi Ubah who I rightly said had no good agenda for the state but only thought he could do business with the intelligence of the masses. This strategy of throw them some peanuts and get their mandate might have worked for politians before now but it didnt work for the oil rich investor and chairman of Capital Oil ltd. Let me show you what I mean. In one of the polling units, the result was: APC( Dr Ngige) - 27, APGA(Dr Obiano) - 49, LP(Mr Ubah) - 1 The election results didnt correspond with mr. Ubahs ill-intended campaign expenses. Mr Ubah suddenly became Father Abraham during the election period: outside the unrecorded cash gifts he gave to people which seemed like he was drawing from an ocean of money, he hired catapillars and other road construction machineries and began to dig on some bad roads in a community in the state. Those machines where withdrawn immediately afte he lost. He was said to have brought tankes of kerosine and allowed people to fetch kerosine like it was water. He also gave huge sums of money to some sacred cows in the state for their approval. A friend said: he really spent, I said: no, he squashed. The people must have reasoned like I did. We have never known mr. Ubah as a philantropist. He has always been a business man based in Lagos who I even doubt can name all the local governments in Anambra without help. How has he turned a mega philantropist, spending desperately in an election period. No, he must want something and surely it was the governors seat. Campaigns are set up so that candidates can announce themselves to the people and communicate to them their agenda and plan for the state. Nigerian politicians have turned it into a time of trying to buy the peoples conscience on the platform of the highest bidder wins the day. How do the mega spenders in the Anambra election plan to recover what they spent? I suspect that selling Anambra state to foreign investors may not even replenish mr. Ubahs expenses. I heard one of Mr. Ubahs supporters during the election say: oga will never win this election but I want to at least get my house rent from him lol wow! Is this the case of the looter being looted? Politicians must be careful in the upcoming general elections 2015. The rules of the game have changed. The electorates are no longer worth the 1000 bucks they share in the polling units to buy votes. There has been a shift. It is time to convince people of your genuieness, competency and good, outlined, fissible plan. If you still want to play the old way, then you must have to spend more and more and more yet not ruling out the possibility of suffering a disgraceful defeat. The people have become wiser. They have decided to tak responsibility of who leads them. They are out and mean this time. ---------- God bless the good people of Nigeria
