LIBERTY HOTEL -, BOSTON, MA Hotel with a Past #1 Spend an evening or two in jail – or what used to be the jail. From 1851 until 1990 if you spent any time at 215 Charles Street, Boston, MA it wouldn’t have been voluntary. In those days 215 Charles Street was the site of a granite prison whose accommodations were limited to 220 cells, a mere 8 x by 10 foot each, that no one with the exception of the guards and warden left on their own accord. Today the structure has been transformed into a gorgeous luxury hotel. The 90 foot tall atrium, the center point of the original building, is now the core of the hotel. Still beautifully illuminated with natural sunlight from the enormous arched windows the rotunda is enhanced with modern fixtures for the evenings. The interior design retains the lingering impression of cell blocks with railed catwalks on each level. Meals are still served in the cells but now the doors are open and waiters have replaced the guards. If you’re ready for a modern visit into the past the Liberty is holding a cell door open just for you.
