LIBRARIANS AND INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS ELECT NEW EXECUTIVE Librarians and Information Professionals from around the island have formalized their working relationship with the establishment of the National Association of Libraries and Information Professionals (Saint Lucia) (NALIP). On Wednesday March 12th, the association finalized its constitution and conducted elections for a national executive for the next two years. The association is open to membership from all libraries as well as, archives services, museums, government, corporate and other information units. The new executive is headed by its first President – Mrs. Kathy Birch McDiarmed of the Hunter J. François Library, Vice President – Ms. Daisy St. Rose of University of the West Indies Open Campus Library, Secretary – Mrs. Vernesta Moses-Felix of the American International Medical University, Assistant Secretary – Ms. Davina Kisner of Vieux-Fort Campus B Treasurer – Mrs. Valerie Augustin-Phillip of the Hunter J. François Library Public Relations Officer (PRO) - Mrs. Vernet St. Omer-Fontenelle of Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Trustee - Ms. Madge Delmar – Information Professional Trustee - Mrs. Catherine Prospere of the Soufriere Public Library Trustee - Ms. Brenda Paul – Past Director of Library Services Mrs. Sarai Francis-Swanson of the Hunter J. Francois Library appointed Editor. Speaking at the formal presentation of the newly elected Executive, President Kathy Birch McDiarmed promised to give life to the expectation of the professionals to highlight the critical role of libraries in the development of the nation. According to Mrs. McDiarmed, the Association will coordinate efforts at re-energizing the importance of Libraries and Information Units as resources in learning; pursue an effective professional development agenda for members and immediately advocate for legislation, which recognizes and reflects the new environment in which libraries and information units exist. The association was formalized just weeks before the commencement of Library Week from April 7th to the 12th. This year Library Week is being observed under the theme “Libraries and Information Services on the Move: Enriching the Lives of Our People” END
