LINCOLN AN ICON : STRUGGLE AGAINST SOCIAL EVILS A historical name coincides with a historic act. Really a brave one, a great fighter against a social evil, an embodiment of commitment for a cause, Lincoln is a new name in the legacy of women continue to inspire and enlighten the future generation. An end to child marriage, as a campaign started two hundred years back coinciding with rising social reform movement and Indian nationalism. The practice of child marriage, sati and other orthodox Hindu social customs came under severe attack from various circles both in colonial India and also beyond. It was essentially an integral component of feudal and religious orthodoxy that stood against women emancipation. Child marriage still widely prevalent in many countries and it serves both for child labour , human trafficking and forcing them to large scale prostitution on the one hand to serve the interest of capital and commoditization of women and on the other serves the feudal hold ingrained in social structure that stands against women liberty and their emancipation. The Indian society even after more than six decades of independence has utterly failed to arrest the rising attack against women and barbaric practices like child marriage, honour killings and burning of girl if married without consent of parents. Chronic poverty, illiteracy, gender bias and patriarchy play its spoils; there is no an iota of dispute. We have also other failings too. Modernity is a mask, constitution is a mockery, democratic movement is derailed and women empowerment is a joke. Here justice is delayed, criminals are bailed out, modern capital and medieval feudal lords of numerous forms ( Khap Panchayat) work together to foil any attempt for radical transformation of society both at individual or collective level. Lincoln fought alone a heroic fight against the social evil costing her life. Abraham Lincoln fought against racial divide and discrimination and won the battle. Your fight and commitment shall not go in vain. We stand by you. We salute your heroic act. You are really a role model. We appeal women organizations, National Women commission must come forward to greet Lincoln in a befitting manner to carry forward the task of abolition of child marriage.
