This is a photo of the home that belonged to John Snavely (a relative of M.S. Hershey). In October of 1954 Hurricane Hazel passed through the area and knocked out power in portions of Hershey. The lights had gone out at the Snavely home and Mrs. Sanvely went down into the basement with either a candle or lit match. Unfortunately, natural gas has filled the basement and the home immediately exploded. From the force of the explosion, John Snavely flew up into air and recalled seeing the tops of the trees. He would survive. His wife didnt. A new home was then built on the corner of Caracas and Java Avenues.
