LIVE-Addis Ethiopian Residents Charity (LA) organizational overview LIVE • Livelihood • Improvement for • Vulnerable • Ethiopians ESTABLISHMENT Livelihood Improvement for Vulnerable Ethiopians (LIVE)-Addis Ethiopian Residents Charity, is a non-governmental, not-for-profit charitable organization devoted to enabling poor households improve their livelihood in its operational area. LIVE-Addis was established in May 2005 following a series of reflection meetings held by its founding members. In 2009 the charity was re-registered with the Charities and Societies Agency of the Ministry of Federal Affairs in accordance with the new proclamation No. 621/2009 under registration No. 0241. FIRST GRANT LA obtained its first grant of an ETB 198,530 from Concern Worldwide Ethiopia and an office provided by the former Lideta Sub -City Kebele 12 administration, free of charge for five years. VISION LIVE-Addis aspires to see vulnerable Women, Children and Youth in Ethiopia become socially and economically empowered, their lives improved and free from poverty MISSION The mission of LIVE-Addis is; to enhance the capacity of vulnerable Women, Children and Youth in Ethiopia through community based interventions in collaboration with development actors GOALS 1. Enable Women and Youth in Ethiopia to become productive, competent, confident, self-supportive and self reliant 2. Enable Children in Ethiopia to become competent and confident Values and Principles LIVE-Addis has core operating values that it aspires to hold itself accountable to and which offer guidance about how it behaves in carrying out its mission. Core operating values influence the culture and public image of the charity as an effective and vibrant non-governmental organization serving particularly vulnerable groups of society. A number of core values have been identified during the planning workshops to give significance to certain aspects that help LIVE-Addis to promote effective teamwork, improve program/project quality and effective management of resources, and address fairness and position LIVE-Addis as a charitable organization. Some of them are... • All human beings need access to opportunities contributing to the development of their livelihood, • All people have strengths and assets • It is possible to make a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable groups • People thrive/succeed when they make their own choices and they are capable of doing so • People deserve better opportunities to participate in their community for equal access to services • It is impossible to bring meaningful changes to the nation without ensuring the full participation of the community. Engagement and participation enrich their lives and make positive contributions • Designed Support and services are only for the target group • LIVE-Addis recognizes that the importance of the role of CBOs, State and non-State actors in the development of support to vulnerable groups. • Well-trained and motivated staff and volunteers make a difference in the lives of the target group. Definition/Representation of LIVE-Addis Logo • YELLOW: - Represents the sun in many cultures illustrates youthfulness. • BLUE: - Associated with sea and sky represents knowledge, coolness, peace, contemplation, loyalty, justice and intelligence. • VIOLET: - Represents spirituality, creativity, wealth, royalty, nobility, ceremony, mystery, wisdom and enlightenment. Governance The governing body of the organization which is the highest decision making body is the General Assembly The Board of Directors, which consists of 5 members where 2 of them are strictly female giving consideration to gender sensitivity, is elected among the general assembly of more than 120 members and serves for a minimum period of two or maximum four years (two terms) only. The Board of Directors appoints the Executive Director. LIVE-Addis has a secretariat headed by the executive Director. The secretariat is responsible for program development, for implementation of programs/ projects and follow-up of the day- to- day affairs of the charity. Currently the executive Director is supported by the management team consists of five members among the staff and generally by thirteen professional and semi professional employed staff and nine parte time and fulltime volunteers Focus Areas & Cross Cutting Issues Focus Areas 1. Education Cross cutting Issues • Environment :- responsible and responsive approach to the care of the environment and proper management of the ecosystem in all our works • Gender :- equality and non discrimination on the basis of gender are fundamental for LIVE-Addis Approach and strategy Creating employment or self employment for the youth thereby improving the livelihoods of poor households, through: • Direct training (Vocational and life skill training,) • Capacity building • Networking and partnership • Participation and voluntarism • Learning and sharing Staffing Currently LA has: • 13 permanent staff consisting of 7 Female & 6 Male and • 45 part time and full time Volunteers ( This include 5 Board members and 2 General assembly Chairperson and Secretary) Membership and Volunteerism • Both membership & volunteerism are open to all residents who are willing to abide with the constitution, principles and values of LIVE-Addis. The major requirement is the commitment to share professional knowledge and experience with other members’ of the community. Currently LA has 111 active members. Intervention areas & Target group Intervention areas • LIVE- Addis is currently operating in 6 Woredas of Lideta and Kirkos sub- city of Addis Ababa and has planned to reach two sub cities and 6 Woredas as well as a new region in the 2012- 2016 strategic plan year. Target group • The Primary target group of LA are :-Vulnerable Women, Youth and Children • Secondary :- Various stakeholders including local government , private sector or employers, vocational skill training institutes, volunteer professionals , community based organizations (CBOs) and the local community at large Core Activities 1. After training Current projects Project 1 Project title “Bright Light Opportunity for vulnerable and unemployed Young Women” project with the fund secured from NEPAD/Spanish Fund for African Women’s Empowerment as a main donor , Eureka Charitable Trust UK and Irish Aid as co-donors for this project General Objective of the project The general objective of the project therefore, is to promote gender equality and enable 500 vulnerable and unemployed young women to be economically and socially empowered through Vocational; and life skills training by the end of the project period. Specific Objectives are to: • Economically and socially empower 500 vulnerable and unemployed young women in Lideta and Kirkos sub cities of Woreda 03, 05, 07 and Woreda 02, 09 and 11 by the end of the project period • Increase the awareness of the 500 targeted beneficiaries and their families/ guardians on traditionally male dominated occupations by the end of the project. • Create at least 20 inspirational female role models for vulnerable and unemployed young women and men in the project areas and beyond • Increase the level of knowledge and awareness of the 500 vulnerable and unemployed young women and their families/ guardians on Reproductive Health and HIV and AIDS by the end of project period Project 2 Project title “Vulnerable and unemployed youth Economic and Social Empowerment Project through vocational and life skills training“Project with the fund secured from Marcial Wace Asset Management (MWAM) UK with the specific objectives of Specific objectives are to: • Support 115 unemployed and vulnerable youth and benefit from vocational, life skills and business development training and service by the end of the project • Facilitate paid and or self/employment opportunities for 90% of the target youth by the end of the project and • Build the institutional capacity of LIVE-Addis and other development partners working/promoting youth livelihoods Project 3 Project title “Enhancing community and government capacity for effective, efficient and responsive basic service delivery” Multi-Donor Trust Fund for the Ethiopia Protection of Basic Services Project Social Accountability Program (PBS-ESAP II) General Objective of the project • The overall objective of the project is to:: Contribute to the national endeavor of poverty eradication through ensuring equitable, effective, efficient, responsive and accountable basic service delivery in Ethiopia. • Specific objectives are to: • Service providers in Kirkos sub city Woreda 02 delivered quality services to service users on education • Citizens & Citizens groups in Kirkos Sub city Woreda 02 enhanced their capacity to demand for public service on education sector. Major Achievements 1. Facilitated various marketable vocational and conducted life skills trainings for more than 700 vulnerable and unemployed youth (given more emphasize to girls). From those 86% of them are now employed or self employed and have started making their own living and supporting their families. The end result is that these youth are now significant part of their society 2. Won National Charities Good Practice Competition Award of 2011/2012 On June, 2012, In a special ceremony with the presence of H.E Ato Hailemariam Dessalgne, former Deputy Prim Mister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the current Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia , H.E Ato Alemayehu Tegenu, Minister of Energy and Mines; H.E Dr. Kebede Worku, State Minister of Health; H.E Ato Meseret G/Mariam, Director General of the Federal Charities and Societies Agency; His Grace Abune Gerima, Bishop of Dire Dawa and Assistant to the Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church; Members of the diplomatic corps and members of the civil society organizations. On the event awards were given to ten organizations under two categories; rural and urban poverty reduction, that have shown outstanding performance in their project implementation. LIVE-Addis has competed under urban poverty reduction category and out of over fifty organizations got the 2nd rank.
