LIVE SESSION: Bauhaus – “Hair of the Dog”. The start to Bauhaus’ excellent Mask album, “Hair of the Dog” takes the old cliché of having a nip of whatever was drunk the night before to cure ones ills and creates a basic but smart lyrical image out of it. Peter Murphy, backed by others in the band, delivers it well, quick and strong, though ironically this is counterbalanced by the mix which keeps him intentionally swathed in echo. The music itself, meanwhile, shows how Bauhaus could create true post-punk work, incorporating the stripped-down energy of punk into newer, angular guises. A semi-shapeless, nails-on-chalkboard Daniel Ash guitar riff gets doubletracked before David J’s rumbling bass and Kevin Haskins’ pounding, beats-off drums steps firmly to the fore, where it stays. Ash’s guitar work lurks lower in the mix, a nice reversal of the usual roles, creating a fierce central riff that nervously screams away. Wrapping up with Murphy delivering an appropriate dog bark as the music grinds down, “Hair of the Dog” is Bauhaus at its most briskly effective. .allmusic Follow – > songssmiths.wordpress/ Like -> facebook/songssmithssongssmiths
